The background of flipped classroom in brief.

It all started in spring 2007, when Aaron Samsia found a newspaper article, which described a application in which it was possible to save a PowerPoint presentation and including voice notes as well as video.

The first idea of Aaron and his colleague Jonathan Bergmann was to allow students’ to watch the lectures by video afterwards to support learning.

After offering the possibility of watching videos they found that the students benefited from watching the videos pre, during and post lessons.

At this point, their model was not yet called Flipped Classroom, but they themselves at the beginning used the name Pre-Vodcasting model. Next, they started to use the name Reverse Instruction, and finally the fall of 2010, Karl Fink wrote a blog about Flipped Classroom and since then Aaron and Joni developed model has been called by the Flipped Classroom name.

Flipped Classroom model today.

The Flipped Classroom model has evolved over the years. Today Flipped Classroom is much more than just video recordings in teaching situations.it allows the student to explore the theme studied in advance by video, makes available data sources on the internet, and digital links to textbook reading even theory. The main thing, however, is that the lesson will focus on project work, discussions and other learning content rather than lecturing which has been watched in advanced.

Verification of competence is possible through, for example, doing project work of the subject area. Student's self-assessment is part of the evaluation of the whole.

What are the benefits of Flipped classroom?

Flipped Classroom method benefits include the following:
  • cooperation
  • knowledge building
  • The use of ICT in learning
  • problem-solving and innovation
  • self-regulation
  • skillful communication
A well-implemented Flipped Classroom environment allows all of the above skills to be learned in practice. In addition to learning the subject students acquire other relevant skills. Flipped Classroom also allows for different student levels and different ways learned. This system provide increased individualized teaching possibility.

It is also possible to carry out teaching with this method so that students generate their own teaching materials. Here the teacher's main role is to ensure and support the learning process.

Technology and Flipped Classroom

Flipped Classroom involves the utilization of learning enabling technology. The material used can of course be traditional written material, but the technology makes it possible to provide the students with a wide and varied variety of teaching materials, for example, animations and videos, audio files, electronic-format text files and various games for self-testing.

What is required of the teacher?

The first time the teacher builds a flipped Classroom materials the compile of content takes more time than the traditional classroom teaching. In the future though, the teacher will be able to take advantage of the prebuilt material and further develop the existing materials and tasks and utilize.

What is required of the students?

Flipped Classroom also requires a new way of thinking from the students, they have to take responsibility for their own learning. This also enables the students to gain skills useful to them in working life and future studies.

The teacher's role is to motivate the student during the implementation and throughout the whole learning presses. Over time, the students themselves will certainly understand the benefits that this type of learning will bring to them.

Design and implement

Flipped Classroom teaching requires advance planning in the same way as any other method of teaching. The following lists of steps show the different actions required in the flipped learning process.
  1. Design and creation of the material used in teaching.
  2. Presentation of learning objectives to the students.
  3. Students become familiar with the teaching material independently.
  4. Students go through and fulfill the assignments given in advance.
  5. Activities carried out in the class.
  6. Reflection and reapplication to the future.

Creation of content

One of the most significant part of Flipped Classroom activities is the production of material. The net is one source of premade materials which can be used freely. The teacher can also create his own materials. Creating materials today is quite easy and hassle free. In general, the most challenging part is creating the content. There is also a really wide spectrum of different online applications, which allows you to create teaching material.
